Base currency in Smart Receipts
Your base currency is the currency every total is reported in. You choose it during onboarding, and it can only be changed while no expenses have been added. Receipts in other currencies keep their original amount and are converted with the exchange rate you enter, so reports and exports always add up in one currency.
How it works
One reporting currency
The base currency is what totals, reports, and export sums are shown in. It defaults to the currency of your iPhone region and is confirmed during onboarding.
Any receipt currency
Each expense has its own currency. Scanned receipts pick it up from the receipt, and any ISO 4217 currency can be chosen by hand.
Exchange rate per expense
When an expense is in another currency, enter the rate as 1 unit of that currency in your base currency. The converted amount is stored alongside the original.
Locked once you start
The base currency can be changed only while there are no expenses. Once the first expense is saved it is fixed, so every stored conversion stays consistent.
How to change it
- During onboarding, on the defaults step, pick the currency you report in. It starts as the currency of your iPhone region.
- If you skipped it, open Settings, then Account Setup, and tap Base Currency before adding any expense.
- Tap Save. Once an expense exists, the Base Currency row shows the current value and can no longer be changed.
- On an expense in another currency, fill in the Exchange rate field before saving.
Where it applies
- Totals in the Reports tab and the spend trend chart.
- The total line on PDF exports and the base amount in CSV exports.
- The currency shown by default on new manual expenses.
- The Exchange rate field on the expense form, which appears only when the expense currency differs from the base currency.
Good to know
Tip: Decide on the base currency before your first scan. It is the one setting in Account Setup you cannot change later, because every expense stores a conversion into it.
Need a different base currency after you have started? Export your data first, then reinstall or restore into a fresh install and choose the new currency during onboarding. Travelling? Enter the rate from your card statement rather than the day rate, and the report will match what you were actually charged.
